Kubra Mir is a passionate community leader and advocate dedicated to building inclusive, empowered communities. She is the co-founder of Muslim Women of Durham Region (MWDR), a not-for-profit organization that creates leadership opportunities for women and youth while fostering meaningful community engagement.

Kubra has led initiatives such as Ramadan Storytimes at local libraries and Islamic History Month events, promoting dialogue and cultural understanding.

Her contributions have been recognized nationally and locally with numerous awards, including the King Charles III Coronation Medal (2025), Women Who Inspire Award from the Canadian Council of Muslim Women (2022), and the Diversity and Community Engagement Award from the Town of Ajax (2022).

Through her vision and service, Kubra continues to champion inclusivity, empower women and youth, and strengthen community bonds across Durham Region and beyond.

Maryum Ahmed is a co-founder of Muslim Women of Durham Region (MWDR) and a dedicated community builder. A passionate advocate for women’s issues, she is committed to helping others and creating opportunities for meaningful engagement and support.

Alongside her community work, Maryum is a busy working mom who balances her professional and personal commitments with care and purpose. 

She is also an entrepreneur, running her own successful catering business that specializes in home-baked desserts, bringing people together through her love of food and creativity. 

Sheeba Khan is a founding Director of Muslim Women of Durham Region (MWDR) and a dedicated professional in the Early Childhood Education field. 

Passionate about education and Muslim unity, she also serves on the board of a local organization that promotes women’s sports within the Muslim community. 

Beyond her educational and leadership roles, Sheeba has worked for many years as a professional photographer, specializing in portraits. 

She now serves as the official photographer for MWDR, capturing the stories, events, and milestones that shape the organization’s journey. Through her diverse skills and commitment, Sheeba continues to uplift her community and create spaces for growth, unity, and representation. 

Chief Number Cruncher at Afshan Ahmad CPA Professional Corporation 

Afshan is a goal-driven, highly organized, and results oriented accounting professional with over 15 years in the accounting service industry.

Afshan brings with her experience in taxation, financial reporting, and bookkeeping. In her Accounting practice, she has helped start ups, independent contractors, construction businesses, IT companies, and professional businesses with their accounting and tax needs.

Huda Adnan, SSW, BSW, MSW, RSW

Huda Adnan is a registered social worker, lead consultant and principal psychotherapist at Noor El Huda: The Guiding Light Therapy/Consulting Services. Noorelhuda is a trauma-informed service that brings holistic mental health support to individuals and supports organizations with professional development training.  

Huda Adnan is a dynamic and influential speaker delivering evidence-informed workshops, webinars, and keynote engagements. With over a decade of experience, Huda is an expert in her field having worked with several organizations such as public and private schools, community health care, provincially and nationally. She brings a compelling and accessible approach to every audience. Huda’s expertise includes- culturally responsive care for professionals, intergenerational trauma, newcomer and refugee mental health, and Islamophobia, equipping participants with the knowledge and strategies to create meaningful change.

In collaboration with Muslim Women of Durham region, Huda led our first in-person workshop on healing from trauma for women which was a success. Huda resides in Ontario, and you can learn more about her by visiting noorelhuda.com or following her on social media: noorelhuda.com/socialize

Dr. Kashmala Qasim PhD at York University in Psychology. She completed her undergraduate studies in Psychology from the University of Toronto and completed a Masters in Neuroscience from McMaster University, with a focus on mental health and obesity. 

She has also completed the Taleem ul Qu'ran Diploma course from Al Huda Institute. Kashmala has been a lecturer in the Department of Psychology at the Islamic Online University, and has also received Level 1 Pastoral Counselling training from the University of Toronto. 

 She has worked in a managerial capacity with Khalil Center. Kashmala’s dissertation involves conducting qualitative research studies looking at Muslim womens mental health. She is now working at the University of Toronto.

In collaboration with Muslim Women of Durham region, Kashmala led our first in-person workshop on mental health for youth which was a success.

We are excited to welcome Farzana to the Board of Muslim Women of Durham Region!

Farzana is a certified event planner with over 15 years of experience as a wedding decorator and organizer of successful community events across the Durham Region, including wedding shows, exhibitions, and women’s-only gatherings.

She played a key role in last year’s Islamic History Month event and is once again bringing her expertise and professionalism to our team.

We are grateful for her knowledge, dedication, and passion for community service. 💫
