Maryum Ahmed, Director of Operations

Kubra Mir is a dedicated community leader. In 2023, she co-founded the Muslim Women of Durham Region, an organization focused on empowering women and youth through leadership opportunities and community engagement. 


Beyond her organizational roles, Kubra actively contributes to her community by organizing events such as Ramadan Storytimes 

Kubra Mir is a dedicated community leader. In 2023, she co-founded the Muslim Women of Durham Region, an organization focused on empowering women and youth through leadership opportunities and community engagement. 


Beyond her organizational roles, Kubra actively contributes to her community by organizing events such as Ramadan Storytimes at local libraries, Islamic History events fostering cultural understanding and community bonding. 


She has received the following awards:

  • King Charles lll Coronation medal by Honourable Mark Holland, Health Minister, and MP for Ajax in 2025.
  • Women Who Inspire Award, Canadian Council of Muslim Women, 2022
  • Diversity and Community Engagement Award for a group, Town of Ajax, 2022
  • Platinum Jubilee pin for outstanding community service, Mark Holland, MP, 2022
  • Certificate of Recognition from Town of Ajax for conducting workshops on Islamophobia, 2022
  •  International Women’s Day Award, Peter Bethlenfalvy, Minister of Finance, 2022
  • International Women’s Day Award, Minister of Transportation and MP for  Mississauga—Erindale, Omar Alghabra, 2021

Maryum Ahmed, Director of Operations

Maryum Ahmed is a founder of Muslim Women of Durham Region and a busy working mom.


Maryum is passionate about women’s issues, helping others and giving back to her community.  


She also runs her own catering company that specializes in home baked desserts.

Sheeba Khan, Founder and Director

Sheeba Khan works in the Early Childhood Education Industry and is a founding Director of Muslim Women of Durham Region.  


Sheeba is passionate about Education and Muslim Unity. She serves on another board to promote Women’s Sports in the local Muslim Community. 


Sheeba has worked as a professional photographer for many years, specializing in portraits, and is the official photographer for MWDR.

Huda Adnan is a registered social worker, lead consultant and principal psychotherapist at Noor El Huda: The Guiding Light Therapy/Consulting Services. Noorelhuda is a trauma-informed service that brings holistic mental health support to individuals and supports organizations with professional development training.  


Huda Adnan is a dynamic and influential speaker delivering evidence-informed workshops, webinars, and keynote engagements. With over a decade of experience, Huda is an expert in her field having worked with several organizations such as public and private schools, community health care, provincially and nationally. She brings a compelling and accessible approach to every audience. Huda’s expertise includes- culturally responsive care for professionals, intergenerational trauma, newcomer and refugee mental health, and Islamophobia, equipping participants with the knowledge and strategies to create meaningful change.

Kashmala Qasim, Director

Dr. Kashmala Qasim PhD at York University in Psychology. She completed her undergraduate studies in Psychology from the University of Toronto and completed a Masters in Neuroscience from McMaster University, with a focus on mental health and obesity. 


She has also completed the Taleem ul Qu'ran Diploma course from Al Huda Institute. Kashma

Dr. Kashmala Qasim PhD at York University in Psychology. She completed her undergraduate studies in Psychology from the University of Toronto and completed a Masters in Neuroscience from McMaster University, with a focus on mental health and obesity. 


She has also completed the Taleem ul Qu'ran Diploma course from Al Huda Institute. Kashmala has been a lecturer in the Department of Psychology at the Islamic Online University, and has also received Level 1 Pastoral Counselling training from the University of Toronto. 


 She has worked in a managerial capacity with Khalil Center. Kashmala’s dissertation involves conducting qualitative research studies looking at Muslim womens mental health. She is now working at the University of Toronto.


In collaboration with Muslim Women of Durham region, Kashmala led our first in-person workshop on mental health for youth which was a success.
